The CSTB 2012 Exhibition and Forum: Representing a Year of Achievement in Digital Multichannel TV(Moscow February 2012) Again the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre hosted the CSTB 2012 International Exhibition and Forum, the premier showcase for innovation, development and creativity in the multi-channel electronic media world. Moscow. Between the 7th and 9th of February three large halls of Pavilion No. 1 were the focus of attention by the leading experts who are driving forward the Digital Revolution in Russia.. For 14 years CSTB has been recognised and has become established as the leading business platform for key players in the market to display their TV and telecommunication innovations, engage in a dialogue with government representatives and launch projects. This year the exhibition was home to over 450 companies, providing a rich and dynamic mix of cable, satellite TV and IPTV operators… producers and distributors of hardware for digital TV systems, system integrators and manufactures of the essential consumer products that are enabling the transition to a “Digital World”. Themed and occupying over 18,000 sq. m. within the three halls the displays attracted 23,820 visitors, a significant growth over the previous year, that was in itself an indicator of the vibrancy of both the event and the industry.. The Organisers were proud to have “Tricolor TV” as the platinum sponsor of the exhibition for CSTB 2012. The large exhibition, that is the immediate “face” of CSTB, is also accompanied by an equally intense business schedule, which every year brings to the forefront the most important topics to be discussed, at a high level, by representatives of the government ministries and departments together with key players in the industrial and manufacturing sectors of the telecommunications markets. It is in recognition of the values brought by these opportunities for open discussion that CSTB enjoys the status “With the Support of the Ministry of Communication and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation”, appreciating this event as a most important indicator and driver of the Russian telecommunications sector. The business program of Forum started with a Round Table themed “The Transition of National Broadcasting to a Digital Standard. New Ways for Players in the Market to Interact”. Officials from ministries and government departments together with key players in the domestic TV broadcasting market discussed a number of issues related to establishing legislation for the mass media. The following topics were discussed: How the project for digitalizing TV broadcasting and developing the digital TV market affects the domestic equipment sector, the transition to the new DVB-T2 broadcasting standard. Replacing overhead communication and distribution cables in cities with underground equivalents. Other topics included, establishing relationships between operators and content producers in an environment of change. Key among the positive trends, the speakers pointed out an emerging regulatory system which allows prompt correction of oversights made when working out legislation and which recognises the role of viewers’ interests and needs in the establishment of package service proposals by operators. Further, a session explored the “Secrets of Commercial Success of a Thematic TV Channel in the Pay TV Market”. Participating were thematic channels and operators together with the TNS international research group. The most important topics were ways of rating niche TV, the deficit of advertising on non-broadcasting TV, and schemes to sell advertising time on thematic channels. The comprehensive conference programme included an IPTV session recognising that operators are moving towards IPTV with participants noting this as a developing trend in global TV signal transmission technologies in addition there is obvious convergence of IPTV and OTT, together with a clear vision that subscribers are gradually migrating away from traditional TV as access to a larger number of devices capable of receiving electronic media content, including mobile phones, tablets, notebooks, and PCs continues to expand. The World Content Show, an International Festival of Pay TV channels featured at CSTB for the 6thoccasion. The festival included graphic presentations of niche channels, both new and those already established and so, once again, familiarised the content consumers with the pay TV world in its diversity so achieving its main goals of helping the viewer to choose channels for a “personal” TV and assisting pay TV operators in selecting successful and appealing content. The “Bolshaya Tsyfra 2012” awards are an established and greatly appreciated social and industry acclaimed event that taking place at the Crocus City Hall on the second evening of the CSTB show provided an enjoyable and spectacular opportunity for official awards ceremony of winners of the Third National Prizes for Multichannel TV. . These prestigious awards recognised the best companies and channels based on the decisions of a jury of leading professionals from the industry including public figures and government officials, TV experts, multichannel TV operators and renowned newsmen. The winners were in the categories of “Operator”, “Digital TV Broadcasting Equipment and Technologies”, “New Russian TV”, and “Foreign TV in Russia”. TV viewers also actively participated in voting for their favourite channels. The Conference Forum concluded with a technical seminar on 3D production, organized by “Comunicare Digitale” from Italy. Experts discussed the possibility of distributing 3D via satellite, issues of producing 3D content and establishing stereoscopic broadcasting, currently employing specialised eyeglasses for viewing and insight to the future of 3D without eyeglasses. Those participating in the seminars came to the conclusion that the main problem related to introducing 3D and HD in Russia is the huge expenditures for producing the programs, satellite capacity, and the absence of good marketing promotion of those technologies for TV with the feeling that it is unlikely – at least in the nearest future – that these technologies will be profitable. This year’s exhibitors captured the imagination of visitors, giving them a chance to get a look “inside” the TV set and from the other side of the TV screen, as well as becoming acquainted with new products and technologies and enjoying a highly interactive programme. Experts in this field had a chance to meet current and future partners confirming the CSTB exhibition as the place to find and establish new business contacts in TV and Multimedia delivery and where trendsetter and innovators in this field make important product announcements.
